UnorthodoxJew officially outs himself!

For quite some time, many have suspected that the anonymous blogger that goes by the name of Unorthodox Jew was none other than California businessman Paul Manilow (a.k.a Feivel Mendlowitz). Sites such as these http://aboutuoj.blogspot.com/ and http://mrroshyeshiva.blogspot.com/ have provided purported documents and other proof to that end. Well, ladies and gentleman, apparently they were correct. Just cruise on over to http://unorthodoxjew.blogspot.com and see the photo that was posted in the profile. It is -in fact- a photo of our very own Paul Manilow.

I will end up by wishing Mr. Manilow the best of luck in all his endeavours and may God bless him for all he has done and tried to do.

Weisz Routed ‘Donations’ To Calif. Businesses and Israeli Banks, Say Feds

BROOKLYN — Rabbi Naftali Tzi Weisz, 59, of Brooklyn and Moshe E. Zigelman, 60, also of Brooklyn, were arrested in Los Angeles Wednesday on federal charges in what the U.S. Attorney’s Office is calling a “sophisticated tax fraud and money laundering scheme.”
According to the 37-count indictment, handed down Wednesday by a Los Angeles grand jury, Weisz and Zigelman solicited donations to several Brooklyn-based charities, allowing donors to claim the money as charitable tax deductions.

But, they secretly promised to return between 80 and 95 percent of the money to donors, keeping the remainder as a fee for themselves. The indictment identifies Zigelman as a “gabbai,” or a lay person who helps the rabbi run religious services.

According to the indictment, the scam began in 1996 and ran through the beginning of this year, involving millions of dollars in bogus donations.

Weisz is the grand rabbi of a Hasidic Jewish sect called Spinka and runs several Brooklyn-based charities associated with the group, including Yeshiva Spinka and the Central Rabbinical Seminary. Both are based on 56th Street in Borough Park.

The charities are also named in the indictment. Repeated phone calls placed to the charities from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle were not answered Wednesday.

The “charities” used two methods to hide the money and return it to the “donors,” the indictment said. One was to pass the money through a money transfer network based in the Los Angeles jewelry district.

This was partly managed by a man the indictment calls “R.K.,” a Los Angeles businessman who turned government cooperator in 2004.

The second method was to wire the donations to secret bank accounts established at a bank in Tel Aviv. The money was then used to obtain loans from the Los Angeles branch of the bank, giving the donors access to the money in the United States.

In January of this year, according to the charges, Zigelman and Weisz estimated that they had collected over $8 million in phony donations, securing a profit of nearly $750,000 for themselves. Also arrested Wednesday were Yaacov Zeivald, Yosef Naiman and Alan Friedman, all of California. Three more suspects, Moshe Lazar, Joseph Roth and Jacob Kantor, were not arrested. They are believed to be in Israel.

This isn't the first time Spinka has been involved in gross corruption. The following story is bizzare because it involves former Israeli Prime Minister Sharon and his soon-to-be defunct Kadima party.

When he formed the party back in 2005, Sharon was looking for a vehicle to launder incoming donations without being subjected to scrutiny by the Israeli authorities. Sharon somehow got in contact with the Spinka Mosdos in Boro Park and a deal was cut to launder the money through it with the understanding that the aforementioned Yeshiva would get a cut for every dollar that came in.

בית הספר לשפות 'ברליץ' יצא בימים אלו בפרסום ראשוני למגזר החרדי, אשר מזמין את הציבור לבוא ללמוד שפות חדשות. ב'ברליץ' החליטו לפעול במגזר לאחר שנוכחו כי קיים צורך, הגובר לאחרונה במגזר, לרכוש שפות למטרות עסקים, עבודה, נסיעות חוץ, שידוכים בחו"ל, גיוס כספים ועוד.

את הקמפיין הפרסומי ילווה משרד הפרסום 'טריו' והוא יתמקד בהצגת יתרונות בית הספר ויכולתו לאפשר רכישת שפה מקצועית. מ'טריו' נמסר כי הקמפיין ישא אופי מליצי ויתמקד בהצגת בעיית קליטת שפת האנגלית במגזר החרדי.

אפרים רוזנשטיין, מנהל מחלקת תקציבאות ב'טריו', מפרט על קמפיין ההשקה: "על מנת להציג את 'ברליץ' כפיתרון מקצועי לרכישת שפה, התמקדנו בהצגת בעיית קליטת האנגלית במגזר. בחרנו מספר סיטואציות משעשעות המציגות את ניסיונות התקשור באנגלית: ערבוב מילים משפות אחרות, אלתור תחליפים שונים, ועוד. את הקונספט המרכזי לקמפיין ניסחנו לאחר מחקר מעמיק שערכנו אשר הציג שיטות אלתור והתמודדויות שונות אשר פופולאריות מאד בקרב המגזר".

לקראת הפנייה המיוחדת למגזר החרדי, ערכו ב'ברליץ' התאמת שירותים למגזר החרדי. הקורסים יופעלו בהפרדה מוחלטת בין נשים וגברים, חומר הלימודים יותאם לעולם התוכן החרדי כאשר התכנים מאושרים על ידי רבנים והקורסים השונים יתקיימו בסמוך לריכוזים חרדיים, כגון: ירושלים, בני ברק- ר"ג, מודיעין, אשדוד, בית שמש ועוד. בנוסף, יתקיימו קבוצות לימוד קטנות של עד 12 תלמידים בקבוצה והלומדים יחולקו לרמות על פי רמת הידע ועל פי צרכיהם.

עם סגולה

זה לא בגלל השימוש בסמים שהוא נאלץ לפרוש, אלא בגלל שימוש בזונות ממזרח אירופה בתנאי עבדות (כידוע, שימוש בזונות בתנאי עבודה הוגנים מותר בגרמניה).

אבל אם נחשוב, שכמעט כל אישיות יהודית מפורסמת, או שנאשמה באונס (ראה נשיאנו הלא נכבד מר אנסי), או בהוצאת לשון הרע (ראה שר המשפטים לשעבר), או במעשים מגונים (ראה בכל פינה), או במעילה, גניבה, שחיטות (לדוגמא ראש ממשלת ישראל),
או (כבמקרה הנ“ל, שהוא אדם שאני אישית דוקא הערצתי) שימוש בזונות בתנאי עבדות וסמים, או (השיא העולמי) שגרירים ישראלים שנתפשים שתוים ערומים וכפותים (ראה צוריאל רפאל הנכבד מאד), נאלץ להסיק שמשהו בגנים של היהודים בטח דפוק.

ואם נזכור, שהעם היהודי הוא “עם סגולה“, נאלץּ לשאול את עצמינו: סגולה למה?
בינתיים רק הראינו שאנחנו מסוגלים לגרום לכל עם אחר לשנוא אותנו.

התבוננות בסטטיסטיקת הפשע והקלון של הישראלים בפרט והיהודים בכלל, גורם לנו לשקול, אם זה לא הזמן להכניס גנים חדשים למאגר היהודי. וזה ניתן כמובן רק על ידי הגברת התערובת עם גנים של אנשים שאינם יהודים טהורים.

אולי שמירה על טוהר הגזע במשך 2000 שנות גלות לא תרם הרבה לשיבוח הגזע.

ישנם שני פתרונות לבעיה. האחד הוא כמובן התבוללות (רחמנא לצלן). פתרון זה אבל ישמיד את עם הסגולה, וכמובן שאיננו רוצים בכך.
הפתרון היחידי שיאפשר שמירת עם הסגולה הוא כמובן הקלה בהגדרת מיהו יהודי ,משולב בהקלה בגיור, כדי לאפשר הרחבה והשבחה של מאגר הגנים היהודיים.
ובסופו של דבר, אבותינו (החל באברהם) דרך מוישלה, וכלה במר פרידמן בעצמו (שנישא לגויה שעברה גיור מזורז) הכניסו גנים טריים למאגר.

אז נראה לי שגיור, ו/או הקלה בהגדרת מיהו יהודי, יפתרו לא רק את בעית העלמות עם הסגולה, אלא גם יעזרו לפתור את בעיית התנוונות מאגר הגנים היהודי.

ואולי אם פשוט נגדיר שיהודי הוא מי שנישא ליהודיה, ויהודיה היא מי שנשאה ליהודי, תהיה זו סגולה לאריכות ימים לעם היהודי

Beware of Charlatan Kabbalists and Miracle-workers

Every week a new "Kabbalist" arrives from Israel dispensing amulets and blessings. It's amazing how many knaves or perhaps naive people are ensnared into this; the frum newspapers are also culpable as they have the option of not carrying the ads.

Bitter experience should teach everyone to use utmost discretion before visiting these miracle-wrokers. Allegations of fraud, theft and even sexual assault have become almost commonplace.

This is merely symptomatic of a larger problem, namely the "Kabbalization" of Judaism. While there was always a place in Judaism for the mystical, the esoteric, this Kabbalah culture and commercialization of it is a complete distortion of Judaism.

Learn the damn language!

The other day I was conversing with some Satmar Chassidim and I was utterly appalled at their atrociously poor command of the English language. I mean these are people who are in many cases second or third generation American-born and they speak English as if they had literally just stepped off the boat.

Secular Studies are usually provided in almost all Chassidic institutions from elementary through high school, but they are there more because of a lack of choice than out of necessity. Little if any importance is attached to it and-in some yeshivas- a child has the option of not attending. College is blasphemy and unfortunately this attitude has spilled over to the Yeshivishe community as well over the past several years.

Is it normal for second and third generation American born Chassidim not to be able to communicate properly in their native language? Is any wonder that many young Chassidim are involved in white collar crime? What kind of prospects do these people have if they do not have the neccesary tools to pursue a legitimate career. After all when Touro college wanted to alleviate this problem by opening a branch in Boro Park , all the holy Rabbanim came out screaming bloody murder. Funny, I never heard them react this way when cops uncovered a large Chasisidic ecstay smuggling ring for example.

It is important to note the opinion of Rabbi Yechezkel Landau, known as the "Noda Beyehuda" (1713-1793) (hardly a maskil or a "modernishe" by any account) on this ; this is what he had to say regarding this subject:

ואמנם גוף הדבר לשבח הנימוסים, ולדעת דקדוק הלשון של העמים גם אני משבח מאד, וכמה מעלות טובות להממשלה עלינו אשר שמה אל לבה, להרגיל את בנינו לדבר צחות, ומצינו שגם בכתבי הקודש גנו אותנו בעת שלא ידענו לדבר בלשון עם ועם, ואל יעלה בדעתכם שאתם יודעים לדבר בלשון אשכנז, כי אין זה נקרא יודע רק מי שיודע לאומרו בדקדוק של אותו לשון, וזה לשון הרמב"ם פ"ב מהלכות קריאת שמע הלכה י' "קורא אדם את שמע בכל לשון שיהיה מבינה, והקורא בכל לשון צריך להיזהר מדברי שיבוש שבאותו לשון, ומדקדק באותו לשון כדרך שמדקדק בלשון הקודש" עכ"ל רבינו הקדוש
ונחמיה אמר "ובניהם חצי מדבר אשדודית, ואינם מכירים לדבר יהודית וכלשון עם ועם, הרי שגינה אותם מאד על שלא ידעו לדבר בלשון עם ועם, ולכן טובה גדולה עשה הקיסר יר"ה שצונו ללמוד הלשון בדקדוק, ולידע לדבר צחות כאשר הזכרתי בדרוש שבט העבר, שהרי גם בימי הנביאים האחרונים מצינו דניאל חנניה מישאל ועזריה שצוה המלך ללמדם ספר ולשון כשדים ונתגלו בגדולה וגם בתורה ובמעשים טובים, כי הירא את ה' עיניו בראשו, ויאחז בזה ובזה והתורה עק(ר)(ב) ? ואף על פי כן לומד גם לשון צח ונימוסיים והנכונים המדריכם את האדם לכל דרך טוב, וכל תורה שאין עמה מלאכה סופה בטילה, והרי עיקר מלאכתינו הוא משא ומתן, וצריך לידע כתב ולשון וכן הסנהדרין שהם היו עמודי הדת של תורה, היו צריכין להבין לשונות העמים

דרושי הצל"ח, דרוש ל"ח

Rough translation (mine): Our government deserves much praise for instituting the study of the German language for our youth. We find in the holy writ that the prophet rebuked us for not being proficent enough in foreign languages. And do not for a moment think that you you know how to speak German properly, for you are not knowledgable enough in the nuances of the language and its grammatical structure. (Quotes Ramabam and the prophet Nechemia to bolster his position)He who posseses the fear of G-d looks ahead and he will grasp both this (torah) and the other (secular studies). The torah is of course the most important but it is also important to be knowledgable in the proper study and use of our language. This is the correct way which will bring one to the proper and good path. All Torah without work is null and void. Especially since our main source of livelihood is masa umatan (dealings with the gentile world) and therefore knowledge of the secular language is essential. We also see that the Sanhedrin who were the pillars of our people were requires to know the languages of the nations.
